I wonder how many rumors like this we'll hear until she finally produces another book?

We speculate about Rowling in the newest episode of Adventures in Scifi Publishing. I will be very interested to see if she can duplicate her Potter success. Doesn't seem possible, but if she does. . . well, as my cohost Sam would say, she can buy another island.
No matter what she writes, it is doomed for commercial failure. Even if her next book sells 800,000 copies (which is an amazing amount), it will still be only 10% of the last Harry Potter. From a publisher's expectations (which are not often realistic), the book would be a flop. From that perspective, she is in a lose-lose situation. Financially, she can't lose since she is pretty much set for life and can write whatever she pleases.
The whole thing was a joke according to Ian Rankin:

but I did like the image of Rowling pounding away on her laptop at a coffee shop. And I agree that literary history is strewn with the bodies of authors who failed to meet the success of their first novel or in this case, series.
